Johanne
Graduation Film Project - Visual Development
Concepts I created for my 3D graduation short film Johanne.
Set in 1944, the story follows Johanne, a young French resistance fighter tasked with escorting an engineer to the Swiss border. After the Liberation, she meets him again in a bar, triggering flashbacks of their perilous journey together.
These keyshots and colorscript capture the contrasting atmospheres of past and present: cold, desaturated “verdigris” tones for the wartime memories, and warmer, more welcoming hues for the bar scenes — especially when Léon appears.
Designing the characters was a challenge due to the film’s semi-realistic style; we emphasized angles and proportions to achieve a strong 3D silhouette. Léon, a pyrotechnical engineer helping the Resistance, is a solitary yet determined man — and a little clumsy.
I also developed the vegetation concepts to reflect the harshness of war through irregular shapes, created the matte paintings used in the film, and produced iterations merging both timelines into a single image, culminating in the final poster made through paintover on 3D renders.
